An illustrative case, written for teaching. Names and identifying details are changed; the layout is simplified to a clean nine-sector plan. The star positions are real — computed for 2026 by the Annual Flying Stars engine.
Mei Lin (name changed), a marketing manager in Singapore, wrote in January with a familiar complaint: since moving into her flat, sleep had turned shallow, small health niggles kept returning, and arguments at home had a strange, repeating quality. Nothing dramatic. Just a low-grade friction that hadn't been there in the old place.
She had already tried the internet's usual advice — a plant here, a mirror gone from there. Nothing held. The question she actually needed answered was classical: which sectors of this specific home carry which energies this specific year?
What the chart showed
2026 is a 丙午 (Bing Wu) Fire Horse year. The annual chart places star 1 in the centre, and from there the nine stars settle into the eight directions. Three placements mattered in her flat:
The master bedroom sits in the South — with the 5 Yellow. Wu Huang, the most afflictive of the nine, brings obstacles and health pressure wherever it lands, and it punishes disturbance. In a Horse year the South also hosts Tai Sui, the Grand Duke. Two reasons, one instruction: this sector must stay quiet in 2026. No renovation, no drilling, no constant activity. She was sleeping — eight hours a night — inside the loudest problem in the house. (Check your own year: Annual Afflictions / Tai Sui.)
The kitchen sits in the Northwest — with the 2 Black. The illness star, fed daily by the stove's fire (fire strengthens earth). The recurring health niggles had an address.
The main door opens East — with the 8 White. The year's wealth star, sitting exactly where the household's qi enters. The flat's best asset, and she was doing nothing with it.
The remedies — placed by calculation, not habit
Classical logic: 5 Yellow and 2 Black are earth stars; metal drains earth. So the cures are metal, still, and quiet — never fire colours, never more earth, never noise.
- South bedroom: a brass wu lou (gourd) by the bedside and a six-rod metal wind chime kept indoors and still — presence of metal, not sound. Reds and triangular patterns removed. No renovation in this sector until Li Chun 2027.
- Northwest kitchen: a brass wu lou away from the stove; salt-water cure in a corner, changed monthly; the unused second rice cooker (more fire) retired.
- East entry: kept bright, clean and moving — the door greased, the shoe pile cleared, a faceted Feng Shui crystal ball in the hall window to scatter incoming light. Activation is mostly subtraction.
- Bed direction re-checked against her Kua with the Bed Direction tool — head end shifted from the south wall to the east wall, which her Sheng Chi permitted.
What changed
By the March follow-up: sleep had settled first — the bed shift and the stripped-down South room came before any object was placed. The kitchen's salt-water cure was on its second change. The quarrels had lost their rhythm; whether that is qi or the household simply breathing easier in a calmer room, the classical texts and the psychologists agree more often than either admits.
The honest summary: remedies did not "fix her life." They stopped a home from working against the year — which is all Feng Shui, classically practised, claims to do.
Do this for your own home
- Compute your year's chart: Annual Flying Stars — free.
- Overlay the nine sectors on your floor plan, North up, from the centre of the home.
- Find where 5 and 2 fall; quiet them with metal. Find 8; keep it bright and moving.
- Check Tai Sui before any renovation.
